Whatever Happened to the Reformation?

Summary: Bruce Ware, Darryl Hart, John MacArthur, and others join the editors in calling evangelicals to recover their Reformation roots. Too many evangelicals believe methodology and results trump theology. To reach a postmodern society, they too readily adopt an unbiblical view of God that many Americans find more palatable. Or they subsume Bible study and preaching to secondary status. Whatever Happened to the Reformation? urges us to turn to the theology of the Reformers and allow it to shape every aspect of church and family life. Take it and read!

What Others Say About This Book:

“Trying to get a handle on what’s wrong with the evangelical church and blaze a path out of our theological morass? Then this book is necessary reading for you. It is a trumpet call to return to that better, higher, purer, and wiser gospel which evngelicals once held.”James Montgomery Boice

“Effectively responds to the assault on the Reformation that is becoming one of the most surprising, widespread, and dangerous phenomena of our time. The issues discussed in this book are crucial to preserving, not just evangelicalism, but Christianity itself.” W. Robert Godfrey Jr.

“Every evangelical and Reformed minister ought to read this book. It offers a substantive response to the new Socinianism of the ‘openness of God’ writers and provides a strong affirmation of the biblical basis of the historic Reformed faith.”Richard Muller

BOOK HIGHLIGHT – God the Real Superpower by J. Nelson Jennings

God the Real Superpower: Rethinking Our Role in Missions by J. Nelson Jennings

Summary: Christians in the United States face complex domestic and international challenges. We face our own affluence, religious-nationalism, and individualism. God the Real Superpower analyzes our multifaceted assumptions about missions, suggesting constructive perspectives about God, others, and ourselves.

About the Author:

J. Nelson Jennings is associate director of the Overseas Ministries Study Center in New Haven, Connecticut, as well as associate editor of the International Bulletin of Missionary Research. He received his MDiv from Covenant Seminary and his PhD from the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Western World at the University of Edinburgh.

What Others Say About This Book:

“For North Americans to participate in God’s mission for the twenty-first century, we must learn not only to see the world as Christ does but to see ourselves as Christ and the world see us. Sharing Christ’s sight requires that we share his heart—a heart formed out of humility, compassion, and suffering. Nelson Jennings explores these themes with passion, with hope and, most of all, with a profound love for the Gospel of the Lord Jesus. The themes are stretching, transforming, and ultimately empowering for the new work of God’s mission.” Bryan Chapell, president, Covenant Theological Seminary

“Someone once said, ‘I know two things: there is a God, and I am not him.’ Dr. Jennings has done a wonderful job of reminding us that missions belongs to God. He is the Redeemer and he is allowing us to be part of it. But it is his work and not ours. We as Americans are a ‘can-do’ people, and we have accomplished many things because of it. But one does not have to be involved in missions very long to realize that when it comes to redeeming the world, we ‘can’t do,’ and that is okay. We can relax in the thought that he is in charge and that because of that, missions will not fail.” – John Rollo, international director for Sub-Saharan Africa, Mission to the World

Author Interview with Kathleen Nielson

Learn more about Kathleen Nielson, author of 11 P&R titles, on this week’s author interview.

  • Question #1 – Tell us a little bit about yourself. . .

I’m a wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, teacher, writer. . . I love thinking about the blend of callings God gives us, growing and enriching all of them through all the rest as they multiply through the years.

I’m the wife of a man who knows multiple callings well, having worked as a college professor, a trader in the financial markets, a pastor, a college president, and now a director of multiple projects in global Christian education. My husband Niel is obviously important in my story: the adventure of life with him has played a huge part in shaping me—and he is my greatest earthly encourager in the work I’m privileged to do. He has shown me and pointed me to the love of Christ. We’ve been joyfully married since 1977 and have three grown sons, two beautiful daughters-in-law, and four absolutely remarkable granddaughters.

For a number of years (most of the years we were raising our sons), I taught college English part-time (literature and writing), but Bible study teaching and writing gradually took over my life! Those two kinds of teaching are not at all unrelated, of course, as they both involve reading and asking questions of texts. Those are skills we’re not generally so good at in our fast-moving world, and I am grateful for the training in English which laid an important foundation for my work in reading/studying/teaching the biblical text—and, by God’s grace, in encouraging others to do so.

I love teaching the Bible to women—both in the local church and in various conferences and other settings. I presently serve as director of women’s initiatives for The Gospel Coalition, which involves connecting with women in many ministry contexts, overseeing TGC’s women’s conferences, and working on various publishing projects. One of my favorite involvements is serving on the board of directors of The Charles Simeon Trust, a ministry committed to training in biblical exposition through both workshops and online courses.

Spare time? If I’m not writing something or speaking somewhere, I’m probably either traveling in Indonesia with Niel, playing with granddaughters, doing Bible study or having coffee with a group of women, reading a book, or going for a walk—or some combination of the above!

  • Question #2 – What inspired you to write your books?

I’ll give two different answers, the first for the Bible studies which I’ve been privileged to publish with P&R. Those studies were begun years ago as a project just for the women of my church, where I helped lead the women’s Bible study. We were looking for curriculum that would lead us into the meat of the Word and teach us how to take it in, whole Bible books at a time—the way they are given to us in Scripture. Finally, one of our leaders said, “Kathleen—how about if you just write it!” And so began one of the most joyful projects of my life.

The second answer relates to my book Bible Study: Following the Ways of the Word. My husband and I were for years blessed to be part of a church where the leaders were committed to training members in reading and studying the Scriptures. As I began traveling and speaking here and there, it became clear that many churches were not so involved with biblical training. I developed a series of talks on just what the Bible is, and what that means for how we should study it—and one of the places I gave these talks was Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, at a women’s conference for an international church. The wife of that church’s senior pastor (who has since become a good friend) urged me to put that material in a book. I’m thankful for her urging—and loved working on that book about studying the Word.

  • Question #3 – Tell us about a few of your favorite books

C. S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces is a favorite and much-read novel, one that delves deep into a story of learning to see what is real and true. It seems to jolt me toward reality every time I read it. I’ll also often pull out some poetry—perhaps Gerard Manley Hopkins if I’m wide awake, or Amy Carmichael if I’m needing encouragement, or George Herbert at any time. John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress comes off the shelf regularly. These writers have helped shape my thinking about God and what it means to follow him: they take the stuff of real life and, as they put that stuff into words, find everywhere echoes of the story of redemption in Christ.

Some greatly-appreciated biblical helps would include books by Graeme Goldsworthy, Edmund Clowney, Derek Kidner, J. Alec Motyer, Dale Ralph Davis, D. A. Carson, John Frame, Leland Ryken, and Kent Hughes (our pastor for many years).

Summary: The Binding of the Blade is an original fantasy series based in part on the prophesy from the book of Isaiah. In book 1, Beyond the Summerland, the adventure begins for a band of young Novaana, eager to serve and rule the four regions of the world of Kirthanin.

Kirthanin is enjoying a time of peace, though Malek, Master of the Forge and betrayer of old, controls Agia Muldonai, the Holy Mountain. Malek’s servants are growing bolder and venturing farther from their mountain stronghold, and the fragility of Kirthanin’s peace is growing ever more apparent. Join this adventure of friendship, love, and betrayal. Ride through majestic forests, and sail the forgotten waters. Rest a while in a summer paradise and walk the streets of an ancient and forbidden city. The greatest challenge of the Novaana’s lives is only the beginning.

About the Author:

L. B. Graham (BA Literature, Wheaton College; MDiv, Covenant Seminary) is chairman of the Bible department and teacher of English and Worldviews at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis. He has written several articles in IVP’s Dictionary of Biblical Imagery. He and his wife, Joanne, have two children.

What Others Say About This Book:
“A staggering accomplishment. The vibrancy and scope of L.B. Graham’s worldbuilding deserves highest praise. Add in well-rounded and memorable characters, thematic richness, and high adventure, and you have an unbeatable formula for success. Ranks right up there with Tolkien and Lawhead as among the best Christian novels of the fantastic ever written.”
– Jan P. Dennis, discover of Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti, and Stephen R. Lawhead.

“L. B. Graham is a marvelous storyteller: His words are vivid and powerful, his imagination unbound. Best of all, he uses a breathtaking array of thought candy—high adventure, tragedy, romance, heroism, suspense, danger. A lot of fantasy novels claim to be ‘in the tradition of Lord of the Rings’—Beyond the Summerland truly lives up to this praise.”
– Robert Liparulo, contributing editor of New Man Magazine and author of the novel Comes a Horseman

“L. B. Graham’s first book in the Binding of the Blade series takes hold of the reader, building one compelling event upon another, and races toward an utterly surprising conclusion.”
– Dr. Kent Gramm, Pulitzer prize nominated author of November: Lincoln’s Elegy at Gettysburg

NEW RELEASE – God’s Battle by Sally Michael

God’s Battle by Sally Michael

128 pages | $16.99 | Paperback | Fully Illustrated | Series: Making Him Known

Summary: Parents work hard to protect their children from danger. But are we helping to guard them in the spiritual battle that already rages around them?

Whether he consciously takes sides or not, every person is in the middle of spiritual warfare. None of us can choose to sit on the sidelines—and even our children are not exempt! So rather than trying to shield them from the very real war around them, why not equip them, as early as possible, to take an active role and fight back?

Sally Michael provides the framework for parents to train their children in the fight of faith. In this full-color, illustrated “battle plan,” she uses the gospel message to introduce children to the state of their hearts, then awakens them to the many battlegrounds that surround us—both from our own sinful hearts and from the enemy’s attacks. She then encourages children to be fighters, giving them a biblical battle strategy to depend on God, resist the enemy, and stand strong!
