The search for happiness is on the rise. Quite literally actually. Over the past few years, the phrase “how to be happy” has been googled 70% more than it was a decade ago. And with this constant search comes no shortage of “answers.”
Celebrities, authors, philosophers and the like continue to weight in. Most popularly in the past few years, we’ve seen gratefulness offered as the key. Others proposed true happiness lies in learning to be content. On the surface, these may seem like better answers than money, fancy clothes, or other material possessions. But apart from God – whatever we rely on for true happiness is ultimately nothing more than an idol.
And when idols come up empty, the search continues…
As Christians we know that true happiness comes solely from God Himself. David knew this (Ps. 16:11), Peter understood (Acts 2:28), Jesus rejoiced in it (Heb.12:2).
So how do we become truly happy in God – like David, Peter, and Jesus?
Elyse Fitzpatick writes:
We create images out of our thoughts of our highest good…They tell us what we should cherish more than Him…We erect false gods because we believe they can bring us happiness.”
Did you catch that?
We become truly happy in God when false gods, “idols of our heart,” – are pulled to the ground and shattered to a million pieces. God alone is left as our source of joy.
But these idols are not always easy to spot!
Often, this is because we don’t understand how to search and know our own heart. Elyse Fitzpatrick has provided a FREE resource to begin this journey.

—David Powlison
“With great clarity and intriguing biblical illustrations, Fitzpatrick explains how idols in our hearts compete with our affections for God. In a gentle way, she tells you how by God’s grace to turn from your idols to a whole-hearted love for God. I highly recommend this book.”
